About The Summer Course

Over this 4 week course, we will use drawing, collage, sculpting and painting to create our own fantasy creatures and their habitats. All levels welcome! We’ll cover the fundamentals of art-making including use of line, shape, composition, value, and color. My course will introduce the work of traditional and contemporary artists, but I love having the kids bring in any personal inspirations as well. The whole purpose of the art class is to have fun while learning, creating, and playing! Every week they will be taking something home that they made. All materials are non-toxic and safe for kids. 4 Week Summer Curriculum

Week 1

Drawing From Life

Several still life options will be provided to choose from including flower arrangements and action figures, and if your child has a particular toy or other object they’d like to draw, please bring it on day one. This week we focus on shape, line, and value.

Week 2

Collage

Taking inspiration from Greek Mythology, we will make our own Chimera creatures by stitching together various magazine cut-outs (supplied), and then drawing the creature we create. Again, if there are old magazines, posters or books your child would like to use, please bring them, but remember they will be cut up! We begin to introduce color into our drawings this week.

Week 3

Clay

We will use clay to sculpt the creature we have made, learning to think spatially and translate a 2d image to 3d object. We will also start thinking in positive and negative space in 3 dimensions as we build a lair/natural habitat for our creature to live in.

Week 4

Final project

Our last day will combine everything we’ve learned to create a final painted illustration that depicts our invented creatures in their environment in any composition we choose.
